Obento

Do you know what an Obento is?

Here you have some nice pictures about this extraordinary food habit in Japan.

Obento is a tasty and funny tradition. While in Portugal pupils usually eat at the school canteen, in Japan things are a little different. Children open their lunchboxes and find rice shaped like footballs, eggs that look like rabbits or flower-shaped carrots all packed up in an obento!
An obento, or bento, is one of the oldest food traditions in Japan. Basically, it is a lunch served in a box. Obento boxes date back to the 5th century when people used to take back a packed lunch with them to work. Today, obentos are very popular and you can buy them everywhere.
To prepare an obento you have to follow certain rules: four parts rice, three parts meat or fish, two parts vegetables and one part fruit.
The obento should be healthy and attractive too. Japanese mothers like to make obentos for their children and eucourage them to eat the right food.
